Editors’ Notes Written for cellist Yo-Yo Ma—in Salonen’s words “one of the most unique life-givers and communicators of our time”—the Cello Concerto was first heard in Chicago in 2017. This recording was made the following year with the Los Angeles orchestra that Salonen led for 17 years. Esa-Pekka Salonen's impressive new Cello Concerto had its origin in his 2010 work for solo cello "knock, breathe, shine". Salonen 's concerto was co-commissioned by several orchestras and was premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under his baton. But surely the strongest performance has come from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, with the silken string section Salonen helped build over 17 years as conductor.
