Part of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge in Clallam County, the Dungeness Spit is a beautiful example of nature at work. The Refuge was part of a concerted effort started by President Roosevelt in 1903 to preserve the natural landscape of the country before it was too late. The spit is also a wonderful place to walk on the beach and if you can get to the Light House Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge offers trails along cliff areas and a walk along the beach of the spit to a lighthouse that is about 5 miles away one way.so plan your time and watch for tides. At the end of the spit you will find the Dungeness Lighthouse, built in 1857. Reaching the lighthouse makes the beach hike 11-miles round-trip.
