In 1958 Kaipiainen returned to Arabia and this is when he began work on his famous beaded birds. These rare birds were crafted out of thousands of handmade beads created by Kaipiainen's assistant, Terho Reijonen. Finland’s acclaimed ceramic artist, Birger Kaipiainen (1915-1988), graduated from the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London, and was discovered and hired by Arabia where he held a position in the art department for over fifty years as well as four years with Rorstrand in Sweden. But his work at Arabia was just part of his creative output. Around 1950, he began to create faïence (glazed earthenware) objects that he called “prisms”, which he decorated with Byzantine-inspired female figures.
